Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Nanchang, with a dedicated vehicle meeting you at the station. Overnight in Nanchang.

Meals:
Breakfast: Nanchang is famous for its mixed rice noodles. Their distinctive flavour comes from plenty of oil without being overly greasy, and they are particularly spicy, yet inexpensive. Earthenware jar soup is also excellent value: the meat is stewed until so tender that it falls apart at a light touch, while the broth remains fairly clear and tastes fresh and sweet. Lunch: Nanchang has a wide variety of food: Wanshou Palace Food Street, Zhubao Street snacks, Jiandeguan Hotpot Street, Hama Street late-night food, Chuanshan Street late-night grilled fish, the local Jijihong hotpot chain, earthenware jar soup, Nanchang mixed rice noodles and fried rice noodles. Jiangxi cuisine uses plenty of salt, oil and chilli, so enjoy it with care. Dinner: Dinner at your own expense.

The Jingdezhen Sculpture Porcelain Factory has ceased production and is now a gathering place for young ceramic artists, as well as the location of a well-known market. Its comprehensive pottery facilities make it easy for artists to obtain clay and send formed pieces to kilns for firing, greatly reducing both production and labour costs. Taoshe also has pottery shops, cafés and workshops. Whether you want to try throwing a pot or study ceramics more systematically, this is one of Jingdezhen's best options. The Saturday market is also recognised locally as one of the city's highest-quality pottery markets.

There are many small pottery shops within Jingdezhen's Sculpture Porcelain Factory, each with its own distinct style. It is worth taking time to browse and find pieces that appeal to you.

Jingdezhen Sculpture Porcelain Factory

(No admission ticket required)

18:00

Activity time: approximately 2 hours.

Jingdezhen's map once showed many porcelain factories and ceramics-related businesses, which were the city's pride at the time.

Today, those porcelain factories have closed, replaced by ceramic creative parks rebuilt on their former sites. Taoxichuan Creative Park, for example, was converted from the Jingdezhen Universe Porcelain Factory and compares favourably with art districts such as Beijing's 798.

Markets are the stage on which the ‘Jingpiao’—people who have moved to Jingdezhen to pursue ceramics—show their talents.

Examples include Taoxichuan Market, Taoyang New Village Night Market, Mingqing Garden Market, the early-morning ‘Ghost Market’, and informal markets that have not yet developed a brand.

The markets offer varied, inexpensive bracelets; spoons, bowls and jars in muted Morandi colours; and fine little ceramic crafts…

There are so many goods, designs and affordable prices that it is no wonder people online say, ‘No one can leave Jingdezhen empty-handed.’

The journey takes 2 hours to the foot of the mountain, followed by approximately 40 minutes on the winding mountain road.

Sightseeing within the scenic area also requires these buses. They are centrally managed and dispatched, so some waiting may be necessary. Thank you for your understanding.

By default, the journey up Lushan uses the scenic area's environmentally friendly bus and takes approximately 40 minutes.

[Ways to go up the mountain] You may upgrade to the Lushan Cableway for the ascent and descent, then use Lushan's sightseeing buses at the summit. Select the cableway upgrade under additional services when booking.

[Journey time] Lushan Cableway is a welcome option for those prone to motion sickness, turning an hour of jolting roads into eight enjoyable minutes.

[Cableway introduction] Lushan Transport Cableway is a transport cableway within Lushan. Its upper station is on Huiyuan Road in Guling Town, Lushan City; its lower station is at Lushan Yunwu Tea Plantation in the Balihu New District of Jiujiang City, beside the ancient Donglin Temple. Lushan Transport Cableway took 3 years to build, with a total investment of CNY610,000,000, and opened on 2017-7-28.

Lushan Transport Cableway is 2,864 metres long, with a height difference of 873 metres. Each cabin is designed to carry 30 people. The whole route has only 4 support towers, with a single span reaching 1,567 metres, and a designed operating speed of 7 metres per second.

Once your Lushan admission ticket has been validated on entry, the scenic area will not refund it except for force majeure. A paper ticket is considered used once collected and is non-refundable. If some attractions are closed because of weather, traffic controls or other special circumstances, this is not grounds for a refund. Please take note.

This section connects several attractions and is one of Lushan's highlights. Walking into Jinxiu Valley feels like becoming part of the mountain: elegant peaks rise ahead, while a seemingly bottomless valley lies below. At that moment, I felt I understood Li Bai's feelings when writing, ‘I cannot see Lushan's true face, because I am within this mountain,’ and experienced a sudden sense of clarity. Travel let me feel emotions absent from school textbooks. The next time I read that verse, I think I will smile knowingly, because I have experienced it.

If you are lucky, you may meet the mountain's ‘little tyrants’, squatting on steps, climbing handrails or sitting on a branch above you: Lushan's wild macaques. If you have food, remember to hide it, or you may not get away easily.

Some feelings can only be understood through personal experience. That may be one of the meanings of travel.

Reminders:

1. This section is a mountain path with some steps up and down. Please take care while walking.

2. Do not touch wild plants or animals, to avoid injury.
