Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Nanchang with Private Station Pick-up · Free Time: Daytime Suggestions—Bayi Square + August First Uprising Memorial Museum + Wanshou Palace Historical and Cultural District + Zhuba Street Food · Evening Suggestions—Qiushui Square + Ferris Wheel · Overnight in Nanchang

Meals:
Breakfast: Nanchang is famous for its mixed rice noodles. Their distinctive flavour comes from plenty of oil without being overly greasy, and they are particularly spicy, yet inexpensive. Earthenware jar soup is also excellent value: the meat is stewed until so tender that it falls apart at a light touch, while the broth remains fairly clear and tastes fresh and sweet. Lunch: Nanchang has a wide variety of food: Wanshou Palace Food Street, Zhubao Street snacks, Jiandeguan Hotpot Street, Hama Street late-night food, Chuanshan Street late-night grilled fish, the local Jijihong hotpot chain, earthenware jar soup, Nanchang mixed rice noodles and fried rice noodles. Jiangxi cuisine uses plenty of salt, oil and chilli, so enjoy it with care. Dinner: Dinner at your own expense.

This is Nanchang the old city, full of everyday local life, with many shops operating for more than 10 years and appealingly low prices.

Recommended food

White sugar cake: freshly made, sweet without being cloying. If you like it sweeter, ask for extra sugar. It is best eaten hot. Some shops charge CNY1 and others CNY2 for cakes of a similar size, so compare before buying.

Fried dough sticks with mochi combine a soft, sticky centre and a crisp exterior. Red bean and pork-floss flavours are recommended.

Soy milk: both hot and iced versions are available, usually CNY2 per serving.

Nanchang mixed rice noodles: the popular Xiaoluozi shop is worth trying.

Boiled and deep-fried snacks: there is plenty of choice. These are signature Nanchang snacks to try.

The sculpture popularly called the 'Speechless Bodhisattva' is actually the Contemplative Arhat, one of ceramic master Zeng Longsheng's Eighteen Arhat Statues in Underglaze Colour. It is held in the Jingdezhen China Ceramic Museum.

The Jingdezhen China Ceramic Museum has far more than the 'Speechless Bodhisattva'. As a specialist ceramic museum, its strength is its porcelain collection.

Highlights include a Yuan blue-and-white meiping vase with scrolling peonies, a sky-blue-glazed meiping vase with cloud-shaped handles, and a famille-rose Hundred Deer vase with animal-mask handles.

Jingdezhen The Sculpture Porcelain Factory has ceased production and is now a gathering place for young ceramic artists, as well as the location of a well-known market. Its comprehensive pottery facilities make it easy for artists to obtain clay and send formed pieces to kilns for firing, greatly reducing both production and labour costs. Taoshe also has pottery shops, cafés and workshops. Whether you want to try throwing a pot or study ceramics more systematically, this is one of Jingdezhen's best options. The Saturday market is also recognised locally as one of the city's highest-quality pottery markets.
There are many small pottery shops within Jingdezhen's Sculpture Porcelain Factory, each with its own distinct style. It is worth taking time to browse and find pieces that appeal to you.
