Short answer: Two days is the right amount of time for Sanqingshan and Wangxian Valley. Arrive at Shangrao Station on the morning of day 1 and drive about an hour to Wangxian Valley. See the gorge in the afternoon and the night lights after dark, and sleep in or near the valley. On day 2, drive 1 to 1.5 hours to Sanqingshan, take the cable car up early and walk the cliff boardwalks, then take an evening train from Yushan South or Shangrao.
| When | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1, morning | High-speed train to Shangrao | About 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Shanghai, 1.5 to 2 from Hangzhou or Nanchang, 40 minutes from Wuyuan |
| Day 1, by 3 p.m. | Arrive at Wangxian Valley | About 1 hour by road from Shangrao Station |
| Day 1, dusk to 9 p.m. | Night lights and evening shows | Lights come on around 6 to 7 p.m. in summer, earlier in winter |
| Day 1, night | Sleep in or near the valley | |
| Day 2, 7:00 a.m. | Early walk in the empty valley, then drive to Sanqingshan | About 1 to 1.5 hours to the Jinsha cable car |
| Day 2, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. | Sanqingshan middle loop | About 5 hours of walking |
| Day 2, evening | Train home from Yushan South or Shangrao | Last cable car down about 5:30 p.m. |
Wangxian Valley is a village of ochre-walled inns and tea houses built into the cliffs of a narrow gorge. It is pleasant by day, but people come for the evening, when the whole cliff lights up.
Where to sleep: a guesthouse inside the valley lets you walk the gorge again early the next morning, when it’s misty and almost empty, and admission is usually included. Rooms are expensive for what they are, and often up long stairways. Family-run guesthouses in Wangxian village, about 2 km from the entrance, are much cheaper.
Leave the valley by about 7:30 a.m. after a short early walk. The drive to the east entrance and the Jinsha cable car takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
This middle loop takes about 5 hours, with around 3 hours of fairly level boardwalk and 2 hours of stone steps. If you’d like something easier, the short loop round Nanqing Garden takes about 2.5 hours.
You can: Sanqingshan on day 1, then Wangxian Valley in the evening (about an hour’s drive), sleeping in the valley. It means a long first day, so it suits travelers who arrive the night before, near the mountain or in Shangrao. The advantage is that you climb the mountain with fresh legs, and on day 2 you can relax in the valley in the morning before an afternoon train. We often decide the order a day or two before, based on the mountain weather forecast.

Yes, if you start very early: Sanqingshan in the morning, then the valley in the late afternoon and evening. It’s tiring, and you’ll need a car and a bed nearby, so two days is much more comfortable.
Yes, if you can. You see the lights without worrying about the drive back, and the gorge is almost empty early in the morning.
Light rain and drifting cloud can make Sanqingshan beautiful, but the cable cars stop in high winds and thunderstorms. If the forecast is bad, swap the days, or add a third day.
Yes. Wuyuan is about 2 hours by road from either place, or 40 minutes by train from Shangrao, and makes a good 4- or 5-day trip with Sanqingshan and Wangxian Valley.
